Jul. 20th, 2004 10:08 amUpon reaching her room, Moiraine paced the floor, cursing herself for ten kinds of a fool. Had she played Daes Dae'mar, the Game of Houses, this poorly while in the Tower, or even in her childhood, she would never have survived this long.
She had mishandled things, and badly. She had finally seen deep within Tom to where the filthy touch of the Dark One lay as a blight upon his soul -- subtly different from the Shadow she knew, and warded in some way so as to be hidden from her senses. Instinctively, she had opened herself to saidar in order to stand ready for defense... and then Door had attacked, and Tom had fallen.
She sighed. It would appear that others, not Aes Sedai, in this place could tell when the One Power was channeled, and she would do well to remember that.
Still, the situation might yet be turned to advantage. The shield she had placed between Tom and saidin would hold, she thought, as long as no one tampered with it; and since his magic was drawn from elsewhere, it should not affect the use of his own power otherwise. In the process, it would seem that she had allayed the suspicions of some others in this place, Peter among them, which could only be useful... except, of course, for Mat, who would never trust an Aes Sedai. She would have to tread carefully there, as always. She smiled, bitterly. How ironic it was that the only familiar face here was one who despised her so. She missed Siuan, and so many others... she missed her home.
Moiraine lay down upon her bed, aching with weariness. The Shadow was rising, and the Dark One could touch this world as well, it seemed. The Last Battle drew ever closer, and she must be ready. She closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep. Light send that she might not dream.
