(no subject)
Oct. 15th, 2004 11:04 amMoiraine sits on the grass by the lake, not too near the water, staring blankly at the stars which blaze in the night sky above. She does not see them, not really; she is thinking, desperately trying to make some sense of the sudden catastrophe that the night has now become.
Peter's words echo in her memory. "...has Dream told you? He is going to try to help you escape once more... Will spoke to me about this... and after talking with Dream on this subject... You would think that all the people who love him and do not want to see him hurt would make an impression."
And Morpheus, without saying a word, had then simply vanished, and barred the way to the Dreaming.
She shivers, then grows still once more. Peter, angry and in pain, had lashed out, and then left as well; although Moiraine knows he must be upset, there is nothing she can do for him. At this moment, it is all she can do to hold herself together-- three inescapable facts keep spinning through her mind.
Dream is going to try again. He had not told her. And she cannot now reach him.
A short, bitter laugh escapes her. She had not told Rand of what was to come that day on the docks in Cairhien, knowing that he would almost certainly try to stop her and that his doing so would destroy him, and her world along with him. Moiraine knows what it is to keep secrets out of necessity, even from those closely involved, and she wonders now if this is anything like how those others had felt.
Softly, she speaks aloud, still unseeing. "The Wheel weaves as it wills. But, oh, Light! The risk is far too great; it nearly destroyed him before. Why? Why would he try again?"
Meg's words, now, come back to her mind. "...well, he loves you, right? And people always want to risk things for the people they love." Dream's words do, as well, spoken on the night Rand attacked, as they had afterward discussed what might be done. "It is all I can think to do for you. To find you a way there, and back again."
Moiraine shivers again, helplessly. "There must be another way. There must be. He did not succeed before, and so there must be another way, one without such risk..."
Memory, pitiless, shows her Anthy, holding out a blue rose. "It's a hopeless dream, really. It suits you."
As her vision blurs, the sky above seems to swirl, reminding her of Dream's starry gaze. Moiraine closes her eyes and drops her head to her knees, willing further thought away and waiting for the long night to pass.
