Master Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore
Headmaster, Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry

To Master Albus Dumbledore, greetings--

I expect that this letter may come as a bit of a surprise to you, particularly given that we have never before had any sort of communication. Still, I suggest that you read on, as I believe that you will have an interest in what I have written.

I am given to understand that you know of the existence of the bar known as Milliways, as well as some of its more unusual aspects, and that you have spoken with Tonks and are aware that she visits often. I am another patron of Milliways, but one from a world that is not your own. However, I have discussed certain matters with those from your world, and it would appear that there are some similarities. In my world, as in your own, there is war against the Dark One, he who is the source of Shadow and evil. I am Aes Sedai, which in your world might be called a witch, and my cause is that of the Light. I have given my life to seeing the Dragon Reborn prepared to fight in the Last Battle against the Shadow; in your world, were I to have the same cause, I might be working to protect and help a young man named Harry Potter. In addition, as Aes Sedai I am bound by certain oaths, one of which is to speak no word that is not true. I tell you these things, not in expectation of aid, but so that you may accord my next words proper weight and consideration.

In my days here, I have become acquainted with someone who I believe that you know -- a man named Peter Pettigrew. He tells me that you are aware of the confession that he has made, so I shall not discuss that here; it is not the reason that I write, in any case.

I first encountered Peter soon after I arrived at Milliways. It was not long after that I discovered something of his history, and that he had given service to the Shadow, and I distrusted him for it; I suspected him of high allegiance to the evil of your world, and was prepared to do what was necessary to protect others from him. He claimed to seek redemption, but I did not believe him; it is easy for Darkfriends, those who serve the Shadow, to use lies and deceit to further their interests, as I am certain you must realize. In addition, those who speak of reform usually remain the same people that they have always been. Redemption is not an easy path to take, and the price may be very high.

And yet, as I observed him, I saw that his actions seemed distinctly at odds with what I would have expected to see of a Darkfriend. Peter serves the patrons of Milliways as a Healer, and he takes his cause seriously; he has offered aid to those who did not trust or like him, simply because he believed that it was needed. He has risked his life, and even his very soul, to help a friend heal a being in grave danger. He came near losing both, but survived, and I do not doubt that he would risk it again if he believed it necessary. He created, at great expense of energy and perhaps even while endangering his own health, an environment for a friend, one Sirius Black, who was trapped here and could not leave. He did this simply because it was requested of him and because he wanted to do something to make Sirius feel free -- because of these things, he has duplicated a lake, willow tree, and shack that I understand may be found on the grounds of your school. He has many friends, now, and has also won the high regard and the love of a lady named Liz. He is devoted to her in turn, and they are to be married soon.

For my own part, I can tell you that he offered me aid even when I remained distrustful, and that I came to believe his sincerity after he took Veritaserum, of his own accord, and answered all the questions that I wished to ask of him. Soon after that, he went with me on a quest into a situation of utmost danger in order to find and aid a dear friend; we survived and were successful, both, and I am not certain that it would have been so had he not been willing to help. Where once I thought him Forsaken, which might be called the ultimate servant of Shadow, I now consider him a friend and a colleague of sorts.

In my world it is said that "no man can stand in the Shadow so long that he cannot find the Light again." I have always wished to believe it so, but it was not until I came to Milliways that I met those who gave me cause to think it truly possible. Peter is one of those; I sincerely believe that he honestly seeks redemption, and that he truly may have the chance to achieve it. Light willing, it shall be so, and I shall help him if I may.

He admires you greatly, Master Dumbledore, and he deeply regrets his past actions. He trusts you as he does few others, and I believe from what he has said in speaking of you that your good opinion is more valuable to him than gold. If it is the case that you regret the loss of the young man you once knew to the cause of evil, I wish to tell you that it does not appear to be so any longer, and to give you hope, that perhaps you may once more believe in him.

With sincerest regards,
Moiraine
